Takagi T-K3-N Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater - 199k BTU Review

Takagi T-K3-N Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater - 199k BTUWe love our Takagi! This heater is doing a great job and we've had it for a year now. With the old boiler type we were going through our 83 liter tank in about 4 weeks (including other appl. as well), but after we installed this unit we are going through 83 ltr. in 6-7 weeks. The run to the Master bedroom is quiet far and the piping is exposed, so it does take just a little bit longer, but not much. I have found that if you turn the water on half way and wait for it to get hot,,,then turn it up all the way it will actually take less time for the hot water to get to you. This unit is small, very easy to install, and I can't say enough about it.

Product Description:
As you can see, the T-K3 incorporates all those "why-don"t-you-have-this?" features into this one new product. Its larger flow capacity through parallel connections will meet the hot-water needs of most high-volume residential applications and many commercial projects, too. In short, the T-K3 fills the gap between the single residential heater and multiple commercial T-M1 units. Performance depends on the temperature of the ground water of course: At a delta T of 60 degrees F in warmer areas - for example, where the winter ground water is 60 degrees F and with the output set at 122 degrees F - the T-K3 will provide a 5.4 GPM, or 324 GPH. In colder areas where the input temperature may be 40 degrees F or less, expect a flow rate about 4.1 GPM, or 246 GPH.

Bosch 2700ES LP Aquastar 7.2 GPM Indoor Tankless Liquid Propane Water Heater Review

Bosch 2700ES LP Aquastar 7.2 GPM Indoor Tankless Liquid Propane Water HeaterThis tankless water heater has been great. It took some getting used to, but we love it. We can see a clear savings in our use of propane. It is small and clean and really the best alternative for heating water. We did not get our tax benefit as had been promoted in the advertisement when we purchased it. It was not being offered for the 2008 year. I have heard it is supposed to be in place for 2009. That was one of the reasons we bought this unit over others that were similarly priced. Oh well......I think it is a good move toward using less energy.

Bosch 1600P LP AquaStar 4.3 GPM Indoor Tankless Liquid Propane Water Heater Review

Bosch 1600P LP AquaStar 4.3 GPM Indoor Tankless Liquid Propane Water HeaterI'm impressed with the tankless water heater, but must say that if I had know what I know now about the installation I would have thought twice about purchasing it. My old water heater vented with 3" vent. This unit take 5" and above 2000 ft elevation you must vent with 6". I'm just under 4000 ft. So you must install new vent up through the roof. The unit uses more gas, but for a much shorter time, so it must have 3/4 inch gas pipe plumbed to it. All in all quite a bit of work, but I'm sure it will pay for itself in the long run. I did all the labor, if someone had to pay a plumber to install the product it would be a much longer time before it would pay for itself!

Bosch AE-3.4 PowerStar 0.5 GPM Point-Of-Use Indoor Tankless Electric Water Heater Review

Bosch AE-3.4 PowerStar 0.5 GPM Point-Of-Use Indoor Tankless Electric Water HeaterThis is for Jack Stecker.maybe you shouldn't be crushing all those pills buddy, I think it's negatively impacting your brain. This water heater is not intended to replace a tank water heater, it is not for your whole house.
If it is tripping your breaker, it is because you did not wire it correctly, or are using the wrong size breaker. The wire sizes that Bosch says to use are NOT intended as a guideline, they are the size that the unit needs. You are probably very lucky you didn't burn down your house.Next time follow the instructions, ALL of the instructions, and take the pills AFTER you are done with the wiring.I have two Bosch tankless water heaters, and they are awesome, but they need to be installed correctly. And yes, they do draw more electricity when they are on than a conventional tank water heater, it's just that they are only on when you need hot water.that draw is why you need to follow the directives about wire size. If it says 8ga wire, you CANNOT use 10ga.
Also, the size requirement for your house service needs to adhered to as well, if is says minimum 200 amp service, you cannot use it with a 150 amp service, you could burn your house down.
My advice, buy the 220v unit and have an electrician install it for you.

Bradford White M440T6FBN 40 Gallon Natural Gas Water Heater Review

Bradford White M440T6FBN 40 Gallon Natural Gas Water HeaterI did quite a bit of research, got seveal estimates and with most charging $800-$1000 for labor decided to do it myself. I was able to pick up the B&W M440T6FBN from a plumbing contractor locally and got a good price, (he even delivered it!) I'm pretty handy around the house but the biggest concern I had was that my HTW is in the attic but called a couple of friends over and went w/o a problem. Easy to install, pilot lite was easy to light and have no issues as all. Unit seems to have a lot of insulation, ceratinly more than the old one. Plenty of hot water and am looking for some energy savings since my last one was 21 years old!

Rinnai R94LSi Tankless Water Heater LP Propane gas Review

Rinnai R94LSi Tankless Water Heater LP Propane gasWe have this unit in our vacation home and it works flawlessly. If you are contemplating a tankless unit here are some things to consider.Buy the highest capacity BTU unit you can.199000 BTU's sound great, but if you live in a cold area, or even an area where the water is cool in the winter, 199000 BTU may be just enough to run an appliance and a shower. The reason is not the water heater, but the temperature of the inlet water. If you heat your water to 120 degrees, it takes twice the capacity if your inlet water is 40 rather than 80 degrees. You may also be aware that tankless units don't work too well with recirculating pumps unless you buy a very high end unit that is specifically designed for that application--this is why we don't have one in our everyday home. Also, the energy savings may be a bit misleading as all water heaters have a minimum efficiency of 75%.That being said, if you want a long shower, this unit is great!!!!

At home we have a high performance unit with a tank--think of a tankless with a built in tank.Ours is a Polaris (I give it five stars), but Vertex and Phoenix are other brands. We use this unit for our hot water and radiant floor heat.

The reason we went tankless at the other home is $3 per gallon propane and space. We were able to remove the old water heater, hang this unit on the wall and put a stacking washer/dryer in the space left by the old water heater. Now my wife is happy and I'm happy not having to spend $10 per month just keeping 40 gallons of water hot.$10 doesn't sound like much, but this unit will last 10+ years--that is a savings of more than $1200 over its lifetime!!

Marshalltown 742G Bucket Water Heater Review

Marshalltown 742G Bucket Water HeaterI use this for all grain beer making when the weather is too cold to use propane outside . Normally it would take around 2 hours for my wimpy stovetop to bring 7 gallons of wort to a boil , but with the aid of this baby I can do it in 45 minutes , which is a huge improvement . Haven't had any problems with scorching. The way it is designed it circulates liquid while it heats it . For the price it can't be beat !

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 Plus Electronically Controlled Tankless Water Heater Review

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 Plus Electronically Controlled Tankless Water HeaterNote: The product image is not quite right as it shows another model than the 36.

I installed a Tempra 36 in a new application (not a replacement). It does everything it says it does and without taking up a huge space. It was easy to install and easy to use. The best part of this product is the endless hot water at a preset temperature.

You MUST review the flow rates and temperature rise charts to be sure it is adequate for your application. If you have colder water or want more water for your shower, the unit may only be able to keep up with one, not two or more people taking a shower at the same time. There are no electric units on the market that are as powerful as the propane ones, so make sure you've done your homework before installing.

The unit WILL draw its rated power (36kw) if you ask it to, so make sure you have enough power. It takes THREE 60 amp breaker PAIRS, which is a LOT of panel space. Check this also before installing.

In operation the thing works flawlessly and does exactly what it says in the manual. The one control, temperature set, is trivial to use. I figure the cost to run it is about $4.32/hr at our rate of about 12 cents/kwh. That's assuming of course you're running it at full draw. How can you beat that? Your own hot spring, virtually, for under $5/hr.

I think I'm in for years of trouble free hot water.

Product Description:
The TempraTM has several advantages over a gas-type tankless water heater. Compared to many similar gas tankless models the TempraTM is less expensive to purchase. Installation is also much simpler and cheaper since it is not necessary to vent a TempraTM to the outside. The venting that a gas unit requires causes anywhere from a 10 - 20% efficiency reduction from heat escaping out the exhaust pipe. Furthermore, for every cubic foot of gas burned, two cubic feet of air have to be mixed in to create ideal combustion. In a cold climate, this hurts efficiency further. When a gas unit fires, it draws in air around it, heats the water, and then expels warm exhaust outside. Since no house is airtight, this suction action causes a drafting condition where cold air from the outside seeps back in through door cracks and other parts of the house that may not be airtight.By nature of the design, the TempraTM is nearly 100% efficient; converting 100% of the electrical energy it consumes into heat. All that heat is then transferred to the water - none is lost to the outdoors.

Factory-Reconditioned Powerstar Whole House Electric Tankless Water Heater AE125 Review

Factory-Reconditioned Powerstar Whole House Electric Tankless Water Heater AE125We bought this water heater for our guest house. After major rewiring and plumbing changes and drywall repair from the rewiring and plumbing, we were finally ready to install. The installation went well and at first it seemed the system was working. However, after a short period of time, the water was not staying hot. It fluctuated in temperature when taking a shower and trying to do dishes in the kitchen sink, it actually went cold. We thought something was wrong so we called CPO (where we bought it) to see about getting this unit replaced, and they referred us to Bosch. After troubleshooting with Bosch on the phone, changing settings, water flow, etc., over a period of a few hours, we were not getting the improvement we had hoped for. To get hot water, the water pressure had to be turned so low that you could not reasonably expect to take a bath...it took forever to fill the tub. We continued to try different settings for a couple of days, but we had guests coming and needed hot water (which we had tried to explain to Bosch) so we went to the big orange store and bought an identical unit for $649. That one worked much better and proved to us that something was wrong with the first unit. Trying to return the unit to CPO, they required an incident number from Bosch. Called Bosch to get an incident number (why didn't we get one in the first place?) and had to call back several times due to long waits on the phone. They will not give an incident number unless they determine the unit is defective. If the board needs to be replaced, they will replace that, but will not give us an incident number to return the unit. So now we have a paper weight that cost $400. CPO will take it back, but not without charging a restocking fee and shipping. Why would we want them to restock this and sell it to someone else? Our only recourse at this time is to get back on the phone with Bosch and try to have them determine whether or not this item is defective. Never mind that they would have us go without hot water the whole time. This has been frustrating and expensive. Also, even though we have one that works, it is not really robust enough for a whole house water heater. Better as a point of service heater, but then you better make sure you have a big enough electrical service in your house to manage everything else you need to use. We have 200 amps, but if we needed two of these units, we'd have toupgrade our service in order to accommodate the huge amount of power these things need up front. Don't buy one of these unless they get the technology more stable.

Intermatic WH21 Electric Water Heater Timer Review

Intermatic WH21 Electric Water Heater Timer
This product is easy to install if you know what you are doing.
You should have some background in electrical ampacity and wiring basics.

I did have to purchase an additional pigtail.(flex tubing with 3 #10 color coded wires, and 1/2 connectors on each end about 5 feet total length)

The heater had the wiring flex tubing direct from the wall to the top of the heater. The additional material was about 10.75 at the local hardware store.

I unhooked the wiring from the heater and wired it to the timer, then wired the new pigtail to where I had disconnected the original wires.

The timer has knockouts on the bottom for either 1/2 or 3/4 inch connectors so if it will accomodate either one. You most likely will have 1/2" connections.

Make sure you turn off the breaker before you start.

The entire process took about an hour total.

The instructions that come with the timer aren't that great, so if you don't know what you are doing, it won't help much.

The timer comes with 3 sets of on/off clips so you can time it on and off 3 times.

We set it aton at 5 am, off at 8 am, then on at 8 pm off at 10 pm.
So the timer is on 5 hours a day and off 19.

We figgure we will save around 25 dollars a month off the electric bill.

So... it will take at least 2 months to pay for the timer and other materials we bought. If you pay someone to install it, it will take much longer to pay for itself.

So far, it is working properly and so I am satisfied.

titanI use two of these (single 3/4" line split into both units, then back to single 3/4" line out) as I live in the northeast and have a family of 8.With all three showers (low flow heads), the clothes washer, dishwasher, and the kitchen sink (can't forget the kitchen sink!) going, I had hot water. The units are set to just below medium. My electric use dropped 30% from the 40gal electric unit I had that only gave us about 10 minutes of hot water and we couldn't use multiple showers at the same time.I have had these units since 7/06.I did not have to adjust the temp during the winter.I am very satisfied.

OME620-D Tankless Gas Water Heater -The "no plumbing modification tankless water heater" Review

OME620-D Tankless Gas Water Heater -The 'no plumbing modification tankless water heater'I had difficulties in getting instructions on how to install the unit even before I bought it! I wanted to know the gas requirements for the unit to make sure I had enough gas pressure for the unit and correct size line. There are no instruction online, I tried sending an email through the website but I got no response. I tried calling the number for Omega 2000 but always got voice mail. I finally tracked down the owner of Omega 2000 (George) and asked him where I could find that info, he asked me to send him an email through the website, I told him that I had and no one responded, he gave me another email address to send the requests to and once again I got no response. Despite not getting the info, I went ahead and ordered the unit along with a vent flue kit and extensions.

The unit was received later than anticipated and was missing the extensions that I ordered. I tried calling George direct as soon as I discovered the missing parts and all I got was voice mail again and his voice mail box was full! So I could not leave any messages. I sent emails letting him know that there were parts missing and please send them, once again no response. After about 2 weeks of calling, he finally answered the phone, I told him because of the missing parts I had to use other flue's to install the unit. He said to send the kit back and he would refund the costs. I sent the kit back via an overnight service and the package was returned to me saying to such address existed!

I still have the kit that I was never able to return or use and George has still not answered my emails 8 months later!

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. The unit works ok, it has failed several times right in the middle of a shower and I have to get out and reset the unit in order for it to work again.

I would have given this unit one star, simply due to customer service, but since the unit works almost as its supposed to I gave it two stars.

I do not recommend anyone buying anything from Omega 2000 simply because of their poor customer service.

Bosch 1600H NG AquaStar 4.3 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water Heater Review

Bosch 1600H NG AquaStar 4.3 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water HeaterEDIT - 1/11/08 -------------------------------------------------
I've been having trouble with the Aquastar lately. It still works but doesn't like to work when the furnance is running. I assumed the furnance was drawing down the gas pressure in the line but after having the gas company out and an HVAC technician they both concluded the pressure is steady and sufficient. Contacting Bosch technical support has proven to be an exercize in patience to say the least. Each phone call (there have been 3) has taken a minimum of 50 minutes on hold. I've spoken to three different techs and have been given three different solutions. First call, very nice lady, apolgized for the wait, I told her the problems and she sent me a new control box (didn't work). The second time I called, the tech told me it was my problem and not the Aquastar. He said I had insufficient gas pressure (I didn't), said I had a vent back draft (tested, I didn't) basically he blew me off. He gave me the phone number of a local tech (wasn't local-40 miles away) that I'd have to pay for (because it was my problem) to come and diagnose my Aquastar. I decided to call back because I was very unhappy with the technical support I had just received. My intent was to make a complaint, but on my third call I talked to yet another tech who diagnosed yet another possibility. He sent me another part to replace, which still hasn't solved the problem. Which is where I'm at at the moment.

I've done some more research on the internet and it seems that Bosch Hotwater tech support is reknown for poor service. Unfortunately that's something you only find out when the unit isn't working.

I'll have to change my recommendation from a buy to a don't buy at this point based solely on customer service. Hot water is not something you can readily do without for any period of time and if you do have a problem with the Aquastar, waiting days to have it fixed is not a solution.
Another curious observation, why is there such a wait for tech support? Must be a lot of broken Aquastars out there.

END EDIT ------------------------------------------------I installed the Aquastar 1600H myself in about 3 hours. I bought it at Lowes and like the other reviewer, had to go to HomeDepot to buy the 5" class B ducting. I gave the Lowes sales ppl an ear full about that but it just went in one ear and out the other.

If you're comfortable with sweeting copper and plumbing your own gas lines its really not that difficult. My biggest problem was positioning the unit so I could vent the exhaust gases. If you don't have a straight vent stack and have to feed the exhaust into the chimney like I did, it required placing the unit really low on the wall. You are required to vent straight up for the first 12" before you can elbow the vent. Along with the minimum run vs. rise of the vent pipe, it forced me to place the unit just barely a foot off the ground. Your situation may be different but keep it in mind. Also, it requires a minimum of 3/4" inside diameter black iron gas pipe. In some cases if you're tapping into the same gas line as your furnance, you may have to install 1" gas line. This unit requires a lot of BTU's and if you choke down below 3/4" it will not run properly. So that means no yellow flexible line to make the last connection. You'll have to hard plumb the iron pipe all the way to the unit.

There are both benifits and negatives to this unit. First the benifits. Long, long, long showers. Literally, you can take a shower all day. Then the next person in line doesn't have to wait for the water to heat back up. It's ready to go. Great for a family getting ready in the morning. Second, big savings on the gas bill. My bill dropped $20 the month after I installed this unit. I figure it will pay for itself in less than two years after the tax credit.

Now for the negatives. Low hot water pressure. That takes some getting used to. The unit has a maximum 4.3 gpm, but that's really unreasonable.(Take into consideration that I'm in the Northern USA and the water in coming into the house is at 50 degrees.) At that flow rate the water doesn't heat up above 90 degrees. That makes it warm not hot. You have to turn down the flow rate to 2.3 gpm to heat the water to 120 degrees. At that flow rate / pressure, if you open two hot water spigots anywhere in the house at the same time it becomes a trickle. There is no way you could run the shower or any other appliance like the dishwasher or washing machine at the same time. If you turn the Aquastar back up to 4.3 gpm you could, but you'll be taking a warm shower not hot (in my case).
Also, at 2.3 gpm, it takes a long time for the hot water to actually get to the faucet. It probably takes 4 to 5 times longer than it used to for hot water to flow from the tap than it did with the old tank system. For example, if I'm washing my hands, by the time I'm done lathering up and rinsing, the water is just now starting to get hot. I've come to realize its not even worth turning the hot water on for short burst of hot water like that.
It takes adaptation to get use to this, like this trick I use in the morning. I turn the hot water on and brush my teeth while the water is slowly making it's way to the tap. Once it's hot, then I turn on the shower. Otherwise I have to let the shower flow for what seems like a very long time before it starts getting up to temperature.

Would I recommend this unit. It depends. If you really need the ability to run two showers or two appliances at the same time, then no way. You'll have to go with the next unit up that has a faster flow rate. There's no way this unit can handle that.

But if you think you can adapt to the low flow rate and really enjoy taking all day hot showers while saving money on your gas bill then this is the unit for you. I really enjoy the savings and long showers.

One more thing. The manual says you have to clean the unit once a year to maintain its efficiency. That means disassembling some parts in the unit. Clean them and put it back together. I haven't had to do this yet, but its just one more thing to consider before you switch to tankless hot water.

Stiebel Eltron Mini 3 Tankless Electric Water Heater - 110 - 120 Volt Review

Stiebel Eltron Mini 3 Tankless Electric Water Heater - 110 - 120 VoltI have to eat this one because Crogan will not accept a return, which by the way, I could not find anywhere in writing. For that reason alone I would not purchase any product from this supplier. I had very realistic expectations for this little heater. All I wanted was warm water to wash my hands and face in a small sink. Even with the low flow aerator this product was unacceptable and I immediately removed it. Please note that the owner of Crogan has put in a review--which is not true.

Bosch AE-12 PowerStar 2.0 GPM Point-Of-Use Indoor Tankless Electric Water Heater Review

Bosch AE-12 PowerStar 2.0 GPM Point-Of-Use Indoor Tankless Electric Water HeaterThis product is perfect for homes where the space is an issue or forlocations distant from heating source.
The first heater we received and installed was mulfunctioning. After discussing the troubleshooting with BOSH, Amazon the same day we contacted them sent us newreplacement. Returning the first heater could be easier. Thank you Amazon.com!
My electric panel was just some year new, we did not have to provide any additional works besides wiring the heater. I saved all closet space(where I had located 30gal. el water heater) for other use. Heater is very small, it would easily fit under the sink. Temperature of hot water can be adjusted to your needs. 2 gallons of hot water per minute are good enough. According to professional installer, the heater is so simple device, that it should not have any additional problems.
I am very happy with the product and am starting considering this type of hot water heater for whole house, no matter price for electrical works.
Where the space is an issue, this product is one of great solutions.
I am highly recomanding this heater.

Rinnai R75LSiN Tankless Water Heater * Natural Gas Review

Rinnai R75LSiN Tankless Water Heater * Natural GasWhile doing a major remodeling which involved relocating our water heater, we decided to go tankless.Since we were upgrading our shower and installing a garden whirlpool tub, we knew hot water demand would soar. Also, we knew both showers would be running at the same time and the old water heater just would not be able to keep up.Our plumber/HVAC contractor is a specialist in energy efficiency, having previously been an executive with a large national energy efficiency company prior to the bust. His recommendation: the Rinnai NG Tankless Water Heater.

It takes longer to get one installed properly, with the extra venting and the materials required.Don't be part of the learning curve for your installer.Make SURE your installer has experience with tankless installations and ASK FOR REFERENCES.It is a different technology and the installation techniques are different from a traditional water heater.

It is a space saving unit, and extremely quiet. And it can flat crank out the hot water! No lags, no lukewarm spaces, no waiting, just all the hot water you want when you want it!Our gas bill dropped about 15% in a much colder winter - no more water heater constantly running to keep hot water hot, no more shortened showers, and a very happy family.

Bosch AE125 PowerStar 4 GPM Indoor Electric Tankless Water Heater, White Review

Bosch AE125 PowerStar 4 GPM Indoor Electric Tankless Water Heater, WhiteMy wife and I bought this from Lowes in summer 2006 thinking it would save our energy bills even though the initial cost for the unit and the required installation for a new electrical service to it was expensive. Right out of the box, the electrician we hired to install it had to order from Bosch a replacement control board because the one we got was bad. Fast forward to February 2008, and we had issues with the control board again and no hot water for showers. Now we are screwed because that part is not covered in the warranty and costs roughly $300 dollars. Not to mention, it was difficult to reach Bosch Hot Water Technical Support because they put you on hold for God awful long time and they are really not that much help. All it is now is a hanging piece of junk on our wall. So, now my wife and I have decided to invest in a normal electric water heater that would just cost more or less the same as purchasing the control board. Buyers Beware! The concept is great but, I do not recommend getting this product.

Bradford White MI5036FBN-337 50 Gallon Natural Gas Water Heater Review

Bradford White MI5036FBN-337 50 Gallon Natural Gas Water HeaterI purchased this unit for my 5 unit apartment bldg. I had 2 40 gal units plumbed in series/parallel.I replaced a "State" Brand that died after 18 years...yea 18 years, the other unit is at 15 years.

This BW 50 gal is doing the trick and is providing hot water for eight persons in five apartments; so far no one has said they have run out of hot water.Seven take showers (not at the same time thank goodness) and one takes a bath. It is performing so well that I took the second State 40 gal offline, and keep it as an emergency back up.

The question is...will this unit last 10+ years?Well see.

Rinnai R94LSi Tankless Water Heater Natural gas Review

Rinnai R94LSi Tankless Water Heater Natural gasWe've had the Rinnai R94LSi for about 1.5 years at this point and have been extremely happy with it.Now that we have had it for a while, I figured I should sit down and write a quick review about it.

Before getting this tankless water heater, we actually had 2 40-gallon hot water heaters in our house.Unfortunately, because of the way the plumbing was run, we had a major issue with running out of hot water if the kids took a shower or bath while we were cleaning up the kitchen at night. When we had the money to do this project, we actually did it to fix the issue with running out of hot water and figured that any energy savings would be a bonus.

Here are some of the main things we've really enjoyed about this unit:
1) Since I replaced 2 water heaters with one tankless heater, I was able to get some extra storage space in the garage and then built a workbench where the storage had previously been.Taken alone, the space savings almost made this tankless worth it for me!
2) We never run out of hot water anymore. Our house has 3.5 bathrooms, kitchen, and laundry - and I can run all the faucets on full blast at any time of year without overloading this unit.(As a side note, we do live in Austin, TX so I suspect that areas with a colder water supply may need a larger unit for the same sized house.)
3) The energy savings have been noticeable. This is one area I wasn't completely convinced of when I bought the tankless unit - but the savings on our monthly bill have been noticeable. What I've done is to compare my gas and water usage with the same month from the previous year and have found that the gas usage has been cut basically in half. The water usage has not changed. It will still take a while before this pays for itself, but I wasn't really expecting that it ever would.
4) We no longer have a water tank in the attic. One of our previous water heaters was sitting in the 2nd story attic and I've known several people who have had their tanks rupture and cause thousands of dollars of damage. With the tankless unit, I no longer have to worry about that issue. Not that other things can't leak, but they don't have 40 gallon tanks! ;).
5) Compared to other brands of tankless heaters, the minimum flow rate is much better - I talk about this in more depth in the next section.

The technology with tankless heaters is quite a bit different from traditional hot water heaters, so here are some other things to consider:
1) I didn't fully understand this before buying the Rinnai, but the minimum flow rate is critically important with tankless water heaters. This number represents the minimum amount of hot water that needs to be flowing before the heater will kick on.Basically, this is just something to keep in mind and it's one of those things that is just different compared to a traditional water heater.I thank my lucky stars that I went with the Rinnai instead of the cheaper models that I also looked at because it turns out that the minimum flow rate isn't as low on those units since most people are just comparing the maximum flow rate numbers! This has impacted me twice when I was taking a cold shower immediately after working out - on those occasions the hot water line was completely drained before I was done showering and I ended up with a REALLY COLD shower until I could get the hot water line filled again.
2) When deciding which tankless unit to buy, be sure to take your local cold water temperature into account. These units will be able to raise the temperature of a certain amount of water by a specific amount - so if your cold water is too cold for the unit you buy, I suspect you will be disapointed.I probably wouldn't even mention this, except that I've read a lot of bad reviews where this seemed to be at the root of the problem. Also, I talked to 3 different plumbers before buying this R94LSi and one of them recommended the R75LSi instead - I'm glad I went with the larger unit since it really wasn't much more money anyway.

As a final note: when we did start looking seriously into this purchase, I had several plumbers come by to bid the job for me; but it quickly became obvious that I could do it for a lot less money. [...]

If you do decide to go the do-it-yourself route, remember that the tankless unit needs a 3/4" gas feed instead of the 1/2" that your current water heater uses. You can't just use an adapter for this - you need to be able to get back to a larger gas section and resize the feed from there (google is a great tool for understanding what you need to do here). As far as the plumbing connections go, the SharkBite connectors were a real life-saver and I'm much more confident in the durability of the connections.

Anyway, I know this review has run kind of long, but I want to repeat that I highly recommend these tankless heaters. We love ours and I would never want to trade back now that I know what I was missing:).

Bosch AE115 PowerStar 2.6 GPM Indoor Whole House Electric Tankless Water Heater Review

Bosch AE115 PowerStar 2.6 GPM Indoor Whole House Electric Tankless Water HeaterI have used these units in several buildings. The biggest building being an 8 unit building all with 1 bedroom apartments. Each apartment has it own hot water heater.

We have OVER a 60% fail rate.First you do a LOT of electrical work to get to the point of being able to install it.Then you put it in and this what progresses:

- day one works great and you think "what a great idea I had"...
- few weeks or months later it is hot for a minute, then warm, then cold as it runs
- you reset the unit try and test everything, it works ok you think
- get a call a day later it is the same warm then cold then warm showers
- you take it out and return it to the store.

I have replaced 3 yes THREE in one single apartment alone. All in all I bought 8, for an 8 unit building, and have installed either new or replacements 18, in a eight unit building that only has 8 on any given day, at this time.I am a whiz at getting them in and out.

So if you are looking to waste money and a LOT of time as you replace it and try and fix it etc this is for you. These could not even sustain a 1 bedroom with ONE tenant. All my units have a single tenant in them....

I did call the company and they are very nice. The guy I was talking with was a technician on what they called the "pro side" for builders professional etc.I explained everything to him and told him of my fail rate and he said that was possible. So they know of the problem, over 60% fail rate did NOT even phase him, he obviously had heard about this plenty of times before me......

Bosch 1000P LP AquaStar 2-3/5 GPM Indoor Tankless Gas Water Heater Review

Bosch 1000P LP AquaStar 2-3/5 GPM Indoor Tankless Gas Water HeaterI purchased this heater to replace a small electric tank heater I use for an outdoor shower. The electric was too small and I wanted more hot water without having a large storage tank. After consulting with an electrician and finding the electric or natural gas tank would be too costly to hook up, I was happy to find the LP version.I had a plumber all set up to install this and he never showed, so after a week or so of hesitation, I installed it myself in basically a couple hours (not including trips to hardware stores). The main issue for installation (since it was outside) was getting the right hookup for the propane tank.To use the regulator included, you cannot just buy a hose at Home Depot or Lowe's.I went (with the regulator) to a propane store here in Austin, TX and was set up with a 2nd regulator (I was told one at the heater and one at the tank, even with a short 2 foot hose, is safest), compression thingys and a nice flexible metal hose.It took a few tries, but I got it going.
NOTE: when I used the hose from Home Depot with the attached regulator that was near the tank and did not use the regulator that came with the heater, the pilot would go out within minutes. When I got the double regulator hose set up, it seemed not to work at first, then I realized I had left the unit "on" and slid the knob back to the "off" position to the left and let it sit for about 5 minutes and tried again. It then worked perfectly.
Set up now, I have a splitter coming from my outdoor faucet, one to a garden hose, the other line goes to the heater ( I used flexible washer/dryer hoses to hook up the shower with brass compression things to make them fit). The shower is from Target (the wood one - not sure if they still carry it) and just has one water line, so it's only hot water coming in.I have the heater turned to it's lowest setting and last night the water was the perfect temp! So, that means if turned up, it can easily be warm/hot enough for a shower where cold water is mixed in if you are in a warm climate. This shower will only be used in warm weather, after swimming or gardening, so I will not need it to heat very cold water.I would expect it to be sufficient for heating most water in the summer for this type of use.At full heat, the water is very, very hot, so I would expect there is enough power there to heat most summer water temps for a comfortable shower.
It is installed on the outside of my house (I had to get a masonry bit and additional hardware to attach it to my rock house - this took about half of the install time) and will be pulled down in the winter and stored to prolong its life.
I worked so hard on this and had searched the internet for info on an easy outdoor shower water heater.I'm handy, but knew the build-it-yourself solar boxes were not where I wanted to go.I hoped this would work and am thrilled with the results. If you would like to contact me about how I set it up or with questions, I will try to help.doshermanasjewelry@yahoo.com .Not sure if I'm allowed to give that out, but going into this, I would have loved a reference for what I was doing or if it would work.

Portable Tankless Water Heater with Shower Head Review

Portable Tankless Water Heater with Shower HeadI received my tankless water heater this morning. It was well-packed and the instructions are pretty good.I appreciated the "extras" that are usually "optional at additional cost," like the shower head, mounting hardware, and propane tank hookup.

But (there's always a "but!"), unless you have plumbing fittings handy, plan on a trip to the hardware store. The threads you must connect to are rough and not cut especially well, something that seems common on items from China, so you definitely need to have teflon tape or plumber's putty handy. On my unit, the hose connections to the shower head leak badly at both ends. Not that big a deal since it's intended as a shower, just an annoyance. And, the shower head male threads are a bit short, so one end of the hose would screw on far enough to not leak too badly, but the other end would spray water all over the place until I reversed the hose. Then it just leaked at the water output of the heater. The hose connection (another nice included item) didn't have a rubber gasket.

As far as heating water, it works pretty well.My input water is at about 50 degrees, and with the water flow turned all the way down and the gas flow all the way up, it got hot enough to be uncomfortable.

Until a slight wind blew out the flame.Be sure to plan to use this unit someplace very well protected from the wind.Even a slight breeze, about 10 MPH (guesstimate), will blow out the flame, give you a slug of cold water, and require you to turn the switch off and back on to relight the flame.

I haven't played with it enough to be sure, but my impression is that the unit won't hold a constant temperature of water output.I mention this because it may require you to use the unit in a place where you can actually reach the controls during use to adjust the temperature of your shower.

Even with the shortcomings, I recommend the unit as a camping or backup water heater. For the price, you can't go too far wrong.Just keep it within reach and out of the wind.

Bosch 2700ES NG Aquastar 7.2 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water Heater Review

Bosch 2700ES NG Aquastar 7.2 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water HeaterBosch ES series is a huge step forward in technical development but such a bad taste has been left by former products and Bosch technical support that few plumbers will recommend one regardless of what improvements are made today or tomorrow. Thismodel still has the same potential for gas valve failure that goes back to their 250 SX series that if condensation or rain is not caught before it reaches the gas valve, the valve must be replaced and is nearly 3X the cost of their competitors. Performance is as stated but if your incoming water temperature is not 65 F then expect far less performance. Your homes gas piping and water piping must be taken into account before considering this and the cost of a single wall stainless steel vent system must be calculated into the total cost. Bosch also requires a propritory roof termination kit that if not installed, voids your warranty and this too adds to the total cost.
As a licensed plumber contractor in Ca and a former authorized service provider I had never in all the years of servicing Bosch, seen a correctly installed Bosch tankless. It really doesn't take that much effort to read the instructions and follow them. Of all the various makes and models we have installed in nearly 30 years, I never once had a failure or problem due to my own installations. Bosch service calls sometimes totaled more than 35 per week on new installations alone by home owners, handymen and plumbers. If properly installed, they are perfectly good water heaters. Tthey do have the best and most robust heat exchangers of all brands, this particular models control board is the most advanced and user friendly of all but only to service providers.
The only downside is the limited access to Bosch technical support tooand if not installed to the letter, Bosch may and have voided warranties in the past.
Due diligence goes a long ways and emotional reviews only blur accurate information for those seeking answers. Bosch is making the effort to improve product and service and I will give them that...
