Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 Plus Electronically Controlled Tankless Water Heater Review

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 Plus Electronically Controlled Tankless Water HeaterNote: The product image is not quite right as it shows another model than the 36.

I installed a Tempra 36 in a new application (not a replacement). It does everything it says it does and without taking up a huge space. It was easy to install and easy to use. The best part of this product is the endless hot water at a preset temperature.

You MUST review the flow rates and temperature rise charts to be sure it is adequate for your application. If you have colder water or want more water for your shower, the unit may only be able to keep up with one, not two or more people taking a shower at the same time. There are no electric units on the market that are as powerful as the propane ones, so make sure you've done your homework before installing.

The unit WILL draw its rated power (36kw) if you ask it to, so make sure you have enough power. It takes THREE 60 amp breaker PAIRS, which is a LOT of panel space. Check this also before installing.

In operation the thing works flawlessly and does exactly what it says in the manual. The one control, temperature set, is trivial to use. I figure the cost to run it is about $4.32/hr at our rate of about 12 cents/kwh. That's assuming of course you're running it at full draw. How can you beat that? Your own hot spring, virtually, for under $5/hr.

I think I'm in for years of trouble free hot water.

Product Description:
The TempraTM has several advantages over a gas-type tankless water heater. Compared to many similar gas tankless models the TempraTM is less expensive to purchase. Installation is also much simpler and cheaper since it is not necessary to vent a TempraTM to the outside. The venting that a gas unit requires causes anywhere from a 10 - 20% efficiency reduction from heat escaping out the exhaust pipe. Furthermore, for every cubic foot of gas burned, two cubic feet of air have to be mixed in to create ideal combustion. In a cold climate, this hurts efficiency further. When a gas unit fires, it draws in air around it, heats the water, and then expels warm exhaust outside. Since no house is airtight, this suction action causes a drafting condition where cold air from the outside seeps back in through door cracks and other parts of the house that may not be airtight.By nature of the design, the TempraTM is nearly 100% efficient; converting 100% of the electrical energy it consumes into heat. All that heat is then transferred to the water - none is lost to the outdoors.
