Rheem MR105245 Marathon Electric Water Heater 105 Gal. Review

I would have given this electric water heater 5 full stars except for one small problem. Apparently, the earlier models have a defective air check valve on the cold water input (outside/above) which leak (water). I have installed two of these: one in 2001 and the other in 2008. The 2008 installation has the new version of the check valve. It is brass, about 2" long, has air holes in the SIDES and not the end. IF YOU HAVE A MODEL THAT HAS THE OPENING/SCREEN AT THE END OF THE AIR CHECK VALVE, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU CONTACT RHEEM/MARATHON AND THEY WILL SEND YOU A REPLACEMENT OF THE NEW MODEL FOR FREE INCLUDING SHIPPING BEFORE IT BLOWS! Our 2001 air check valve failed which caused water and carpet damage. We purchased this model because it is not supposed to fail... Rheem customer service was great despite the opposite I have read on the web. This heater has a 6 year warranty on parts and the tank is lifetime. Even though the air check valve was 2 years out of warranty, they replaced it via Fed-x overnight at NO COST. I mentioned the ruined carpet to them, and they began a claim. All things considered, I am pleased with this. My plumber does not like anything with poly tanks, so I checked the web for recalls, class action lawsuits, etc., on this and found none. I am the only person I know of to mention the check valve problem above anywhere. They were so quick and friendly to replace the part, that I believe they know about it...

Bosch AquaStar Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater #125B-LP Review

I expect my appliances to be low maintenance.Aquastar 125B was installed 2-1/2 years ago in new construction, provides plenty of hot water for 2 low-flow showers simultaneously.Read manual when I moved into house, failed to perform annual maintenace of unit.
If you buy this product order water valve rebuild kit, you will need it.
In addition to annual maintenance the water control valve must be rebuilt every 2-5 years or a dangerous overheat condition arises.Mine currently requires rebuild. $15 in parts $30 shipping FedEx.The two set screws that connect the water control valve to the gas control valve are deterioted and frozen.The instructions say that if this condition exists, stop and call tech support as the gas control valve may be damaged.Repeated calls to tech support, more than 10, have resulted in no answer.Left messages that have not been returned.Emailed Controlled energy to get necessary parts.So far, eight days and no hot water; wife not very happy; I'm suffering.

I bought the Soleus thinking that quality comes from the price and advertising; however, I was mistaken. Although the installation was simple it only became a problem there after.
First my unit kept having an E3 error message which apparently means my air conditioner is working so well that it has internal frost.It then stops cooling the air and waits for itself to defrost. So every 5 minutes or so it would stop working even if the air temp was above 80 degrees.
I didn't mind too much thinking the company would help since they vouch great costumer service. They have yet to call me back or respond via email.If you call their costumer service hotline they MAKE you leave a message if they are too busy.My three messages must have been misplaced.
All in all... BAD company and a bad expensive product.

Fahrenheat Electric 5120 BTU Baseboard Heater, Model# FBE15002 Review

The heater I got is made in the USA. Hope they continue to make them here onshore, but gladly, mine doesn't have the toxic fumigants embedded in the paint (and other parts) that other heaters have from the shipping container fumigants they apply to the shipping container interiors when they ship from China (to prevent mold and mildew, and insects in the containers, which are sometimes enclosed for months.) Heat really activates these chemical toxins, embedded in the materials. Those toxic vapors take a while to gas-off of a new heater, and I have enough health problems and headaches without them.

I gassed this unit off at 1500W outside for a few hours and used it at 1000 watts indoors without any problems, and I have severe multiple chemical sensitivity.

The heating element in this portable heater is the same size as a 1000-Watt stationary baseboard. On the 1000-WATT setting (low) it gives a steady nice heat and doesn't get the chassis extremely hot on the outside - probably because of the angle at which the heater stands, which maximizes airflow convection. The housingdoesn't even get as hot as a 1000-WATT stationary baseboard, which sits vertically against a wall, not at an angle, like this one does.

The "enamel" paint on all heaters is not really a traditional mineral enamel coating, but a modern polyester imitation, sometimes called "powder coat." It is like when they call eating utensils "silverware" which is mostly stainless steel. Heat this "enamel" paint with a torch and it wont blister or crack, it will melt.

This Marley (aka Q-Mark, farenheat) heater has a good price for a good basic product.

The location of the thermostat is much better the location of the thermostat on a radiator-type stand-up oil-filled heater, all of which are now made offshore as far as I have seen in stores (and therefore very toxic anyway, please let me know if there are still any made in USA.)

In element heaters, there is very little heat at the ends of the element. The heat gradually increases to the middle of the element. The thermostat is at the end. That means element heaters are less likely to effect the control of the thermostat relative to the ambient temperature in the room, which will have more effect on the thermostat than it will with a hydronic (oil-filled) heater, especially radiator-types. That makes the element heater far better for heat control and moderation.

I own 5 cabins that I operate as a lodging business.I replaced an old propane water tank in one cabin with a Bosch AquaStar 125B-LP - same as the HX except with a standing pilot.That model is great!Works perfectly.When it came time to replace another cabin's old propane water heater, I wanted the same model but couldn't find one available so I decided on the 125HX-LP instead.Thought it was a bonus that it would even gain me a $300 tax credit because of its energy-efficiency.Well, I have been very disappointed in this model and the tax credit doesn't make up for it.It is VERY touchy with water pressure.If the volume of water going through the tank isn't just exactly right, the unit won't ignite...sometimes the unit lights, sometimes it doesn't.It's been quite frustrating.Personally, I think the cabin water pressure is quite high for what I'm used to elsewhere, so I'm not sure just how much this unit needs for optimum operation.If it wasn't such a pain to get another unit and uninstall this one, I'd send it back!Unless you've got the water pressure of a fireman's hose coming through your pipes, I wouldn't recommend this model.

Soleus Air LX-140 14,000 BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner, 12,000 BTU Heater, Dehumidifier and Fan, Grey with Black Cover Review

I have tried 5 different units over 8 yeasrs (two being this one). Only one worked 1/2 way decent, and it still has problems.

This one is the most powerful 110volt portable unit there is.

In general, they all end up leaking water all over the place. None of them seem to be able to evaporate the water as fast they are supposed to. By winter, I can expect the units to leak water everywhere, and the water light never comes on.

All 5 brands are cheaply made and by the same factory even though they are from different manufacturers.

If you are looking for portable AC. Better to skip it as you'll be lucky if you find a unit that satifies your needs. IF you are insistant, go with a better built unit. Google around for a unit built in the US, most likely it will be designed for server room cooling. Most likely that will run $1000-$3000.

I am on my 5th unit and wish we had just spent the money up front instead of having to replace the unit every year as we are doing now.

These units are generally cheap and you get what you pay for. I would rate this higher if not for the water issue (I just cleared an 1/8 inch of standing water out of a 12 x 12 room).

Bosch ProTankless GWH C 800 ES LP Tankless Water Heater, Propane Review

I have the Natural Gas version of this. I learned more than I anticipated needing to, on my quest for the perfect tankless water heater.The Bosch 800 series was my perfect model.

While it is now obvious to me why this model is head and shoulders above anything else, you may need to spend some time learning about tankless water heaters to see why it is so significant.

1) Ultra efficient, it has 92% efficiency. Only the top of the line models are this efficient. This means lower yearly costs.
2) Powerful: 10 gpm! This puppy can power most houses that have multiple showers and sinks. It is their highest flow unit. It can also be daisy chained so another unit can be attached.
3) 15 year PRO warranty. Instead of the 5 year or 10 year of other models.
4) New Technology.This is the only Bosch unit to have the technology to create this efficiency and the cooling benefits.
5) Reliable. Even though it is cutting edge, some of its parts are based on the 715 unit that is very reliable.
6) Easy repair. Bosch has one of the most extensive list of certified repairmen. Also, unlike other companies, most of the parts can be replaced and are easily available, due to its popularity.
8) Low heat. This model has 2 condensers. That is why it is more efficient. The added benefit is that the heat coming out of this is like a hair dryer. Much MUCH cooler than most units.
9) PVC pipe can be used. I dont know of ANY other water heater that can be vented with PVC pipe. That means smaller pipes, easier work, and much cheaper. Normally water heaters need galvanized vent or Stainless steel venting which is extremely expensive. It can easily cost $300 or more.
10) Concentric Venting (one hole). Because the exhaust is so cool, you can use a Concentric Vent to combine both intake and exhaust from one hole (wall or roof). Without this a water heater you need TWO 3 or 4 inch diameter holes, at least 3 feet from each other. So the extremely hot exhaust does not get used in the intake and overheat the unit.

NOTE:
I am just a consumer. I am not a guy that fixes these, nor do am I associated with a company that sells them. I just wanted a tankless & researched like crazy. Rheem, Takagi, and Rinnai were other companies who make products I considered.

Eemax EX95TS "Thermostatic" Electric Tankless Water Heater Review

If you use a tankless water heater eventually you'll learn that they are cheap, unpredictable and will go out at a moments notice. A back up is
a necessity, I chose this one for my back up and as expected it was needed
to replace the Titan that lasted 6 months. This Eemas ex95ts worked great
for 3 weeks, and then the circuit board sparked, poofed smoke and set off
the smoke alarm. No response from their customer service. This thing didn't even last long enough to get a back up for it. Hopefully someone will make one of these that will last awhile but so far I have not found one and the Eemax certainly has been the worst I have tried so far.

This "hot" water heater came with the house we bought.The problem is the water looses heat, rapidly.In fact the water is instantly ice cold without warning(dangerous for Grandmothers).It is less than five years old.The plumber has been to our house a couple times to look at it; as did the previous owners.The last time he was on the phone with Takagi's tech support and they both could not trouble shoot the problem.Everything tech support suggested was checked and the result was; no reason for the cold water problem.The fact is we're wasting more cold water down the drain than saving by having the "on demand" water heater.With the service calls, we're installing a tank water heater.I honestly don't think Takagi could get me to install another of their products in my house, even if it were free.Every bath, shower, laundry load and dish washer load shouldn't be an uphill battle.

I would have given this electric water heater 5 full stars except for one small problem. Apparently, the earlier models have a defective air check valve on the cold water input (outside/above) which leak (water). I have installed two of these: one in 2001 and the other in 2008. The 2008 installation has the new version of the check valve. It is brass, about 2" long, has air holes in the SIDES and not the end. IF YOU HAVE A MODEL THAT HAS THE OPENING/SCREEN AT THE END OF THE AIR CHECK VALVE, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU CONTACT RHEEM/MARATHON AND THEY WILL SEND YOU A REPLACEMENT OF THE NEW MODEL FOR FREE INCLUDING SHIPPING BEFORE IT BLOWS! Our 2001 air check valve failed which caused water and carpet damage. We purchased this model because it is not supposed to fail... Rheem customer service was great despite the opposite I have read on the web. This heater has a 6 year warranty on parts and the tank is lifetime. Even though the air check valve was 2 years out of warranty, they replaced it via Fed-x overnight at NO COST. I mentioned the ruined carpet to them, and they began a claim. All things considered, I am pleased with this. My plumber does not like anything with poly tanks, so I checked the web for recalls, class action lawsuits, etc., on this and found none. I am the only person I know of to mention the check valve problem above anywhere. They were so quick and friendly to replace the part, that I believe they know about it...

This unit is worthless.I bought a more powerful unit than was remotely necessary to feed a single sink.The unit felt cheap at first, but I reserved judgement.Now I have used it for a month, my conclusion is that this water heater can't even heat water for a single sink.The relays constantly switch off and on, thus even when water becomes slightly warm, it goes back to cold.This is possibly due to fluctuations in water pressure.

In a laboratory setting this heater may have supplied tepid water, but in the real world it is useless.

Rheem MR50245 Marathon Electric Water Heater 50 Gal. Review

We bought a Marathon (though not with the Rheem logo) water heater about a year ago. Our water tended to eat up the metal of regular water heaters, and I did not feel like replacing my water heater every 4 years. So far it has been great, no problems. It will probably save $30 a month for most households.

We bought it through our rural electric cooperative. It was about $700 for a 55 gallon "low-boy", a shorter and fatter tank. If you are in a cooperative, or know someone who is, you might save some money by getting it through them.

Don't forget to loop the connecting metal hoses that connect the water heater to the water pipes. Make sure you get hoses long enough so you can do this. This prevents the hot water from rising into the water pipes by convection and wasting energy. Of course, insulate the hoses also. Also, don't forget to flush the drain valve (let about 2 gallons flow) every year to prevent build-up of silt.

NORITZ Outdoor Nat Gas Tankless Water Heater 9.3G/PM Review

After comparing all the leading brands, we selected the Noritz due to the price / performance / reliabilitymade it a good value. We had the unit professionally installed, which took one day. The total cost to us was $2,900 all in. We expect $1,000 back from the federal tax rebate.
The performance of the unit is quite good. Our old $50 gal unit was in the attic but this unit was installed outside near our AC units. I was a little concerned about how long it would take to move the hot water around the house. It is really not a big issue. It takes about a minute to get to the master bath, which is the furtherest point from the unit.
The water is hot and endless... nothing to do but enjoy!

I was excited to find this product as a cheap alternative to a pricy gas heater, and bought it.The price was cheap enough, but then I spent the same amount again buying a bunch of diverter valves and plastic hoses, so I could divert water from filter through the SunHeater when the sun was shining, and bypass at night and when overcast.I even built a home-made 20 foot stand out of 2x4's so it wouldn't just sit on the ground and would have a better angle to collect the sun.I didn't have any problems with the product itself, but I live near Boston, MA, and it's just not a very sunny part of the U.S. Couple that with my back yard having trees near my pool so even if it is a sunny day, sun won't hit my backyard until around 10:30am, it just never warmed the water enough for me. I have it connected to my 15 foot above ground 4 foot high pool, so I think one panel should have been enough.I ended up with hoses all over the ground and diverter valves hanging with bunji cords off the sides of the pool and filter, a huge 20 foot panel on a home made 2x4 bed, and just no where enough sun hitting the panel for me in my area.I am going to bite the bullet and pay around $600 for an LP gas heater this year.This way I can guarantee when I have a birthday party or cookout with kids coming over, I will know cloudy or whatever, that my pool will be warm enough for everyone to take a dip.After all, as a scardy-cat adult I only go in when the water temp is 80+ and without a heater in my area with my backyard I am lucky if this happens ONCE the entire summer where I can catch a dip.

Bosch 425HN NG Tankless Water Heater Review

Not a lot of difference as far as the home owner is concerned from the 1600H model. This is as stated, a single appliance water heater and with all tankless be aware the actual performance varies widely depending on in fluent water temperatures and gas availability. You can not replace this where your old 40 gallon sat using the same 1/2" gas and vent. It requires a 5" type B vent, 3/4" gas and a .6 gallon per minute flow. It does have a rather poor design on the hydro generator that is susceptible to the most minute particles causing it to fail to create the voltage needed to spark and ignite. Its advantage if you do not have power and want a model that does not have a standing pilot, this is ideal. There is no freeze protection and it can be damaged by cold winter down drafts and not a good candidate for areas that experience freezing temperatures.
Unless you have a manometer and multi meter to check values, you can not work on this your self if service is needed and don't expect most plumbers to have them either.
Bosch does not have anywhere nearly enough trained service personnel to field support their products and their installation manuals are not a help here.
Due diligence is a must before buying any tankless water heater. Call their technical support and ask yourself, do I want to spend this much time waiting for help if and when the time comes? At the end of the day, it's all about service. Take it from a former Bosch Authorized Service Provider...

Rheem Tankless Water Heater RTG20037 Cosmetic Pipe Cover Review

The pipe cover come with a bottom unlike some other covers.The pipe cover arrived fine.The rough in for the water heater was not in the specified dimensions for the cover to fit without modification.I had to cut a hole in the bottom to accomdate the 3" drip leg of the gas service.I also cut another hole to accomodate the pressure release valve instead of elbowing the expansion release pipe to the manfacturer provided hole.THe problem was more with the plumber's installation of the water heater than the pipe cover.

We've experienced a flawless install and operation from our Stiebel Eltron. Unlimited hot water and lower electric bills are the two big positives for this appliance, but I also like that it's about the size of a picture frame hanging on the wall and opened up a lot of space in our utility room when we replaced our old tank water heater.

Only thing to keep in mind is that this is not a drop in replacement for an existing tank water heater. We had to have an electrician come out and wire up a 60 Amp 6 gauge wire from the breaker box to the water heater for a nominal fee (about $200), other than that the plumbing and mounting was super easy, both of which I did myself in about an hour's time (thanks to Gatorbite plumbing fixtures).

We are really enjoying the Stiebel Eltron and would highly recommend it to anybody looking for an electric tankless water heater.

AirTap A7 Review

Though I didn't purchase my Airtap through Amazon, I thought it would be worthwhile to share my experiences here, since I haven't seen too many reviews on the web.

First, my Airtap has been installed for almost two weeks.It came boxed up securely, and arrived with no damage.I paid $699 with free shipping, though I have seen it since for $599 with free shipping.I originally started with a 50-gallon (new) Whirlpool water heater with factory-installed nipples.These were a nightmare to remove (necessary in order to install the Airtap).I ended up exchanging this tank for a smaller (40-gallon) one that didn't have pre-installed nipples.

Installation, other than described above, was relatively easy.Incoming water temperature was 49 degrees, and it took the airtap about 2.5 hours to bring the water up to 115 (my original temperature setting).I soon realized that this unit does not maintain a constant temperature in the tank; rather, it keeps it within a 15 degree range (turns on when the temperature get to 15 degress below the set point).My first shower after some laundry, dishes, etc. was warm, but not hot.I realized that this is because it was at the lower end of the temp range (probably about 100 degrees) due to it turning on just as I started my shower.

I turned the thermostat up to 130 at the recommendation of the manufacturer, and it has helped tremendously.I am generally happy with this product due to it's energy savings.If you are considering one, there are a few things to keep in mind:

1.This doesn't keep your water at a constant temperature, and you may find the temp less than ideal, even after sitting unused all day or night.

2.The recovery time is much longer than with the electric elements/gas burner, which could cause problems if you plan on several showers/high demand in a short period of time.

3.It does make noise when running, so if you are bothered by noise, this may not be for you.

4.Though I couldn't find any stamp on the unit, after reading about it and seeing the printing style on the box, this appears to be yet another product imported from China.

I would recommend a larger tank to allow for more storage (around 80 gallons).This would probably alleviate hot water shortages to some extent.

Overall, I would recommend this water heater.There are others on the market, too.The Airtap seems to be well designed and built, and it should pay for itself in enegy savings in less than a year.We will have to see how durable it is in the long run, though.Just be aware of the few quarks (above) as compared to your existing water heater, and I'm sure you'll find it adequate, though it may leave you out of hot water occasionally.I guess it could takes a little adjustment to the typical American "I want it now" lifestyle.

I heat my home with free wood, so the heat used to heat the water in the winter is also free.Keep in mind that if you use gas, oil, propane or electric to heat your home, you are using this heat that you already paid for once to then heat your water; you are essentially paying to heat the air and then paying to transfer the heat into the water, though it is still much more efficient than using electric elements.

On the other hand, in the summer, you can look at it as using hot air that your AC would normally dump outside to heat your water - basically "free" hot water in the summer (or free air conditioning, however youwant to look at it).

Rheem RTG20147 3"/5" Horizontal Direct Vent Kit for RTG-53DV Review

We ordered both the water heater and the vent kit.When we got ready to install, we noticed that the water heater nozzle is 3 inches in diameter, and the vent kit nozzle is 2 & 1/4 inches in diameter.Make any sense?No.I contacted Rheem and they advised that there is an adapter for this problem for $34.99.I requested an explanation as to why this was this way...other than the obvious money-making scheme.I have not heard back yet.So I can't actually review if the product works well or not, but I can tell you I was royally po'ed about this adapter thing.
