Rheem Outdoor Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater For 2-3 Bathroom Homes RTG-66XP Review

Rheem Outdoor Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater For 2-3 Bathroom Homes RTG-66XPWe have a 2200 sq foot home which had the hot water tank 40 feet from the kitchen and 70 feet from the master bath so it always took a full minute and many wasted gallons of water to get something hot. With the floor plan relocating an indoor tank to the center of the house was not ideal though the indoor tankless would have been an option but I did not want to deal with the work of the air intake and chimney install.

The information on the Rheem outdoor tankless was mixed and stated that is was good to -30 and yet elsewhere I saw it listed at 30. That said, the -30 was on their website so we decided to go with it. Upon receiving it and the additional grey pipe cover which was not sold here at Amazon. I did find and buy it at Wholesale America and it is definitely something you'll need to make this a clean install.
SKU: RTG20169XG Weight: 9 lbs Rheem RTG20169XG Grey Pipe Covers for the RTG66-X $64.29

After installing my pipes, gas and electric I insulated this cover with hard Styrofoam and of course also ran a heat tape on the pipes coming out and going in. In mounting this tank to the house, I stayed low and used a 2.5" hole saw to make 5 holes through to the crawl space which will allow more of that warmth to access the now insulated pipe cover.

It is still early November in Kansas and if any problems develop during the colder parts of winter, I will update this posting.

As far as the tank and how it works, it is wonderful! We are using propane from a 1000 gallon tank and as with most of these installs, the tank has a first stage regulator and then at the house is a second stage. We have a gas furnace, dryer, stove and now this higher Btu hot water tank so I was naturally concerned that I might need to install a tee and place a second second stage regulator at the house and then run a dedicated line to the new water heater. I opted to try and tap into the lines using the appropriate flex pipe for high volume and it worked out just fine with only the one regulator. We tested this by running the furnace, dryer, oven and burners while running hot water. By holding a meat thermometer in the stream of hot water while the tank thermostat was set at 120F, I had a steady reading of 119 and when set at 130 I had 129 which means one or the other of these is off a wee little bit but the tank produces the hot water as it should! How cool is that?

With regard to the remote thermostat that you'll get with this... it only goes up to 120F until you bypass that if you want to go to 125, 130, 135 or 140. The instruction sheet that came with our tank was confusing and instructed me to open the tank cover and switch a dip switch and push a button and watch for a flashing light etc. Please don't waste your time!! I called their 800 number and talked to somebody in 'trouble shooting' and she instructed me to simply go to the thermostat and with it set at 120, hold the 'temp up' key until 140 pops up. Then I think she said to hold both up and down keys and that would lock me into the higher temp settings. You can then adjust in 5 degree increments and we chose 130 because we have a dishwasher and no little ones in the house.

The unit works well delivering endless supplies of hot water and is very quiet not that it matters outside!

Water Heater Draft Inducer Blower (Rheem 7062-3861) 115 Volts Fasco # A136 Review

Water Heater Draft Inducer Blower 115 Volts Fasco # A136It was relatively straight forward to replace and install on my furnace.

I replaced the motor in March 07, after 10 years of operation from the OEM motor. This replacement motor only lasted 17 months. This motor of course only has a 12 month warranty, now requiring me to replace it again after one season. The voltages being delivered to the motor are consistent, and it is somewhat of a disappointment that it was not built with longevity in mind.

Broan 655 Heater and Heater Bath Fan with Light Combination Review

Broan 655 Heater and Heater Bath Fan with Light Combinationas a result of doing major home renovations for the last 6 months, i ended up spending quite a bit of time researching all the products and appliances i had to install... so hopefully this will save you some time and headache.i ultimately needed two bathroom fans with heaters for one medium sized full bathroom, and a small half bathroom in my DC rowhouse.and since the bathroom fans had to be installed inside my ceiling, i wanted to make ABSOLUTELY SURE that i didnt have to EVER dig back into my ceiling drywalls to repair or replace.

well, after weeks of agonizing and reading review after review on site after site, i settled on a Panasonic FV-11VH2 WhisperWarm for the full bath, and am SOOOOO happy i did.it was definitely rated for a larger bathroom than mine, and is slightly more expensive than i wanted, but is SUPER quiet (both heat and fan), unintrusive, and does the jobs perfectly.just note that the heat isnt mindblowing, but does a great job if you live in an older house without central like mine, and there's no heat at all in the bathrooms.... a great help while soaking in the bathtub, also if you turn the heat on 15 mins or so earlier on cold mornings with the door closed before going in to brushing your teeth or showering in the am.im so glad i bought it, and wish i bought two! [truth be told, my electrician claimed that the Panasonics were the best from the start, but im still skeptical by nature so i researched extensively anyways. save yourself the trouble.]

for the smaller half bathroom, i regret deciding to spend less, and expect less.my rationale was that the bathroom was so small, was only a half bath, and i wasnt planning on really spending any time in there.however, i did want a heater because it's on a cold wall and FREEZING in the winter.anyways, after reading a ton about lower priced models for smaller bathrooms, i bought this "Broan 655 Heater and Heater Bath Fan with Light Combination" and am SUPER disappointed.it's SUPER LOUD and vibrates like CRAZY in the ceiling both in fan mode as well as heat mode as well as both modes.it does work and does get rid of the stink though, and has a heater as well, though it doesnt really put out much at all (lame even in this super small half bath).i suppose it's better than nothing....Don't be fooled by the high Amazon.com Sales Rank like i was!spend a bit more and get a better unit.you wont be sorry.

[NOTE- im just a homeowner, do not work for either company, and ive posted this same review on both the Panasonic item i bought as well as this one.]

In-Sink-Erator W-152 Electric Water HeaterWe bought this as a point of use heater and it is performing well after a month of use. Stiebel Eltron DHC 3-1 Electric Tankless Water Heater Review

Stiebel Eltron DHC 3-1 Electric Tankless Water HeaterHad high expectations that this nice looking German engineered device would solve demand for instant hot water at a single sink. Not exactly "instant".It takes a while for the water to even get warm. The problem is the water needs to flow slowly in order to benefit from the electrical heater.Naturally that means a very low flow output.A small tank device would be better...but alas, is much more expensive to run in order to keep the water hot 24 hours a day. Also don't forget...This requires a new 30amp electrical circuit and water by-pass shut-off valves to be installed. Not for the handyman-challenged.

Water Heater Auto-Shutoff Valve Review

Water Heater Auto-Shutoff Valvedecided to order this item after realising our water heater was close to 10 years old. Figured it would be easier and cheaper to install this thing than ro replace the basement carpet if the heater failed.

Fitted this in under an hour, some plumbing skills required.

works on demand (you can open/close the valve from the controller) and the sensor works with a single drop of water - though be careful where you put it, step on it and you'll break it.

Bosch AquaStar Indoor Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater #125FX NG Review

Bosch AquaStar Indoor Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater #125FX NGI live in a city apt., and must provide my own hot water. I replaced a 30 gal. tank with the HX (hydro pilot) model. It took some getting use to, it would shut down if I added too much cold to cool off the hot water. 2 1/2 yrs after installation, it doesn't always want to light. I have to run the hot water for 3 - 5 seconds, turn it off and turn it on again. Most always this works, but its an agravation. Bosch won't help, as I admitted I installed it in my bathroom, which voids the warranty, and Bosch won't give any technical advice for this other problem as a result. I installed a large vent in the lower half of the bathroom door, and have had no air intake problems. I am on the top floor and was able to vent out to the roof rather easily. I also have a CM detector/alarm in the bathroom near the unit which registers neglible amounts of CM.

"The place where you install the heater must have enough ventilation. The National Fire Codes do not allow gas fired water heater installation in bathrooms, bedrooms or any occupied rooms normally kept closed." from the installation manual, obtainable on the web. This is fine, and ample warning if you get a copy of the installation manual before you purchase the unit. The claim that hot water is instantaneous is not true. It actually takes longer than a heater with a tank, which has hot water standing by. The tankless takes cold water, and starts heating it a bit after the water starts to flow, but does come up to temperature pretty rapidly. In Europe (and foreign films) you see these right above the sink in the kitchen for a good reason. My kitchen is some 45 feet away from the bathroom, so it takes a little bit to get hot water, compounded by the fact that I have to turn the water on and off to fire up the unit.

"WaterValve (Part # 8707002649): The water valve on this heater should be serviced periodically. Lubricate component 36 on page 16 with a small amount of silicon, faucet or lithium grease every two years to keep its o rings fresh and pushrod sliding smoothly. Every 3-5 years replace component 36 on page 16."
Installation manual.

Unless you are technically proficient (able to install the unit your self) you will have to hire a plumber to do this. This makes the unit more expensive to maintain than a tank unit, perhaps eating up whatever savings you might realize not keeping a tank hot 24/7.

So, unless you have extra indoor space to stick this thing, are prepared for the maintenence routine, hopefully it will last twice as long as a tank model (20 yrs vs. 10 years) and will save on the purchase/installation after the first 10 years.

Savings: It's very difficult to compare energy usage between the tank/tankless models. I couldn't find any useful charts, etc to make a reasoned comparison. Perhaps if I was an engineer of some sort. I did have to replace my 12 yr old tank model, and liked the idea of not having to turn it down when I went away, etc. Also, the longevity of the unit is attractive, as well as the hydro (125HX) pilot is cool.

Bosch AQ4 Water Heater Vent Kit Review

Bosch AQ4 Water Heater Vent KitI have to say, why would there be so many "USED" kits available? I went to a service call where the plumber actually caused a fire by installing one of these improperly. It's not that difficult. When you are considering installing one of these, first consider the total cost of the 125 series heater and the vent cost and you are up around the cost of many other brands which are already power vented and have far more advanced features. The 125 series Bosch water heaters are little work horses but must be maintained. The fan housings in the AQ must be cleaned s they can and do load up with dust, dirt and provide habitat for nesting insects. The average homeowner is going to have a hard time installing this, even plumbers who have installed Bosch water heaters will shy away from these kits in favor of internal power vent models. This is like putting rubber tires on a covered wagon. Due diligence is worth every minute spent before mis-spending you $$$

Watts 500528 Premier Four-Chamber Tankless Electric Hot Water Heater Review

Watts 500528 Premier Four-Chamber Tankless Electric Hot Water HeaterMy conventional water heater died and I decided to go tankless since this is a second home. The price was quite a bit higher than a replacement tank heater, but since I use very little hot water it seemed like a good fit.

The first thing that I ran into was the electric requirements. This thing has four 7000W heating elements and each one requires a separate 30A 240V circuit. Since I didn't have that much room in my service panel, I had to install a 125A sub-panel. This also required pulling four 10-2 cables through the attic and into the utility room. Given the price of copper, this is not an insignificant expense. If I had it to do all over again, I might have moved the water heater closer to the service panel.

The actual pluming was pretty easy. It works just like a regular water heater with 3/4 inch inlet and outlet. The specifications say that a blowoff valve is not required, so I did not install one.

I am a little upset by the design of this thing. The pipes come in from the top and the wiring is on the side. The problem with this arrangement is that any sweating from the pipes runs down into the unit and onto the electrical wiring. I had a small leak in a connection when I first turned the water on and the water dripped down onto the circuit board in the unit.Fortunately, I didn't have the power on yet, but it did take a bit of work to dry everything out. I would have much preferred that the water connection would have been on the bottom and the electricity on the top.

When I powered the unit up, there were a number of clicks and beeps and flashing LEDs. The unit quickly settled down into a constant blinking of a single green LED. The very limited manual indicated that this was the normal operating mode. After a few small tests at the kitchen sink, I was satisfied that the unit was working, so I decided to take a shower.

Everything worked fine and the water was plenty hot enough. As a matter of fact, I will probably turn the temperature down a bit from the factory setting. One issue that I have is that when any of the four elements turn on it causes my lights to flicker slightly. This is a common problem since this also happens with any large electrical load like the heat pump or hot tub. The issue is that the elements seem to be turning on and off constantly during the shower causing a lot of flickering. This is something that I guess I will have to live with.

I only have a 200A service into my house and this is the minimum recommended for this unit. It will be interesting to see how well the power holds up when I have the heat pump, hot tub, and a shower all going at the same time. I probably ought to turn on all the burners on the stove at the same time just to really give it a shakedown.

The only other issue that I have is the apparent lack of information on this unit. I don't believe that the manufacturer has any useful web site or customer support. The manuals that come with the unit are very limited in information. With the unit powered on and idle, there are periodic relay clicks that I assume are normal, but nothing is mentioned in the manual. I am guessing that this is some sort of diagnostics, but I am not really sure.

Over all, I probably would not replace a conventional water heater with this unit again. Given the total cost and time involved, I cannot see that I will ever come close to recovering the investment. I am a technology junkie and like to try new things, so the experience is worth something I guess.

Bosch 1000P NG AquaStar 2-3/5 GPM Indoor Tankless Gas Water Heater Review

Bosch 1000P NG AquaStar 2-3/5 GPM Indoor Tankless Gas Water HeaterJust self-installed my 1000 P NG water heater I got from Amazon (1-week shipping was free).Took me a day (soldering copper pipe is not very easy for me).I replaced a 40-gallon tank unit.I live in a small beach house in Southern Califoria and needed to replace my 1997 tank unit and since the Bosch was actually less than a tank unit and I could gain much needed floor space, I gave it a try. After replacing my existing 3" venting with 4" double-wall, the total insatlled price was a little more than if I had bought another tank unit. This unit has a "234 therms/year" government rating versus "263" for the tank unit it replaced (so I don't expect to save much on my gas bill).I had researched tank-less water heaters and this Bosch unit does not require stainless steel venting which saves a lot of money over galvanized. As with all units I have read about, it's limitation is that you must use at least 1/2 GPM of hot water in order to get the unit to fire-up (no more trickle of hot water during shaving). The quality of the unit was OK-the drip pan must be user installed and requires modification to work, and the front cover was bent somewhat and makes adjustements in gas flow difficult.Read the users manual on-line before buying and you won't have any surprises.I operate the unit at it's lowest water flow setting (the right-hand knob) since this also means that the unit will fire at the lowest water flowrate.I also operate it at its lowest gas flow setting and the water is still REALLY hot, so I am not sure what all of the complaints are out there about luke warm water.Bosch states that every 2+ years, preventative maintenance is required (something not required with a tank unit), so keep that in mind before buying.

I'll right another review after a year or so, or, earlier if I have problems.

Bosch 1600PS LP Aquastar 4.7 GPM Indoor Solar Whole-House Tankless Liquid Propane Water HeaterI have a 'batch' solar hot water tank on my roof I put in when I built the house in 1990.It preheats the water before it goes into a water heater, and previously I had an LP gas heater, a 40 gallon tank. That system worked well, but four years ago I did an addition and put in a Bosch solar type tankless heater designed to back up the solar hot water. It works very well, sensing the temperature of the water coming from the roof and firing up only as needed to increase the temperature if the water from the batch heater isn't hot enough. While it works perfectly there are two concerns. One is that the solar unit has a standing pilot light rather than electronic ignition; I believe they could figure out how to fix this.Secondly, the unit is small and if someone upstairs calls for hot water while I am in the shower the water gets cold until I adjust the mix, then the water is hot enough. This heater will not work for a large family, though putting in two might work.It has saved a lot of money in LP gas, and I have noticed the reduction since putting in the Bosch compared to the previous method.I can't say how much because I used to use LP gas to cook and when I did the addition we switched to an electric stove, so the gas use would have been reduced anyway.Still, I use very little LP gas on a yearly basis, only 200-300 gallons for home heating and water heating for a 2700 sq. ft. house; not bad!

Bosch 2400ES NG AquaStar 6.4 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water Heater Review

Bosch 2400ES NG AquaStar 6.4 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water HeaterI wanted to write an honest review of this product since I couldn't find much online about on-demand hot water heaters. Our tank broke, flooding the basement, and we wanted to look into alternative ways to heat our water efficiently. We're in Boston and the tap water here is about 45 degrees.

The way this works is that when you turn on the hot water in the house, the unit senses the water flow and begins to heat up a set of pipes inside. As the water passes through, it's heated to about 122 degrees.

The pros:

- It works normally, just like before.I turn on hot water, I get hot water.
- You don't experience any standby losses of having a tank - Gas is only used when you are actually using hot water saving both money and energy.
- The water is very hot in the shower. We can also use the dishwasher OR the washing machine with the shower. All three would probably not work well.
- There's no footprint. You put this on the wall, and it's vented outside.
- If something breaks, you replace a part rather than the entire tank, saving time and money.
- If it breaks, there's no flooding!
- We received rebates from both the gas company and from the federal government through a tax credit for the "green" purchase.

The cons:
- It costs more than a traditional tank to both purchase and install. We paid about $1000 for the unit itself, and an additional $1000 to have it installed. We had to have someone drill a new vent (both out and intake), put in stainless steel and PVC piping, and re-route the hot water in our basement.
- It takes a few seconds to up to a minute for the water to heat up.
- It's more difficult to make incremental changes to water temperature.
- You cannot get a "trickle" of hot water. The unit needs a certain flow to start in order not to damage pipes.

All in all, we're extremely happy with this unit since the cons were more a matter of up front cost (but we'll save down the road) and lifestyle changes.

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 29 Plus Electric Tankless Water Heater Review

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 29 Plus Electric Tankless Water HeaterI am very happy with this purchase. Mounting the Tempra 29 Plus and the required new electrical box in the closet was as easy as 8 screws. Wiring it all up was a little more work. The plumbing is simple if you put it where your tank was. And losing our old 50 gallon tank gave us some new closet room for the house! The product itself is absolutely fabulous and is only about 4-5 inches deep and maybe 15"x15"ish. It looks very well made. (Those Germans always make good stuff!) Once installed, your water will easily get hotter than you can stand and I felt no fluctuation in the shower when the washing machine and a sink were also running hot. The ONLY negatives I see are 1)the dedicated line requirements and 2)a couple of our fluorescent fixtures flicker/strobe slightly when hot water is running. I feel like that might simply be due to cheap bulbs or something because the "flicker" is isolated to just two fixtures in the whole house. Bottom line: Buy it. Just be prepared for a little extra cash to go to a new electrical box, 3x50amp breakers and some 8ga wire. But in the end, you'll be happy, you water will be hot, and you won't be heating 50 gallons of water all day long for nothing any more. I can't wait for the next electric bill to see what my Tempra 29 Plus is saving me!

Seller's note: A minimum 200 AMP household electrical service is highly recommended and will likely be required to install this model. If you are unsure of your electrical capacity in your home, please consult your electrician before ordering.

Bosch 1600P NG AquaStar 4.3 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water Heater Review

Bosch 1600P NG AquaStar 4.3 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water HeaterThis product worked fine for about 10 weeks. It then started shuting down while in the middle of the shower.Turning off the water and then turning the water back on, the unit would then start delivering hot water.I contacted tech support numerous times and they say nothing is wrong with the unit. They want me to send pictures of the installation, have a gas tech come out ($80.00 my expense)and check the gas pressure on thier side of the gas regulator. The last tech I talked to said to turn the gas shut off valve almost off and see if that helped. It does help but did not fix the problem.Think about it, use your gas shout off valve to make it work right. He said that my ground water temp was probaly too warm (71 degrees). They will not tell me in writing what they require of me to get the unit replaced or what they deem wrong enough to replace the unit.Apparently working fine for 10 weeks and then sending cold water during your shower daily is not enough.

Watts 500800 Premier Hot Water Recirculation Pump, Blue Review

Watts 500800 Premier Hot Water Recirculation Pump, BlueI don't know why few stores carry this and few people are aware of this great product, including those sales persons in home improvement stores. It gives instant warm water to all the rooms in your house, it saves 10,000 gallons water a year (really, I measured and calculated) and it is so easy to install.

Doubt about if it really works? Try this: go to the farthest faucet in your house and open the hot water. Once the water becomes hot, close it, but not fully, leaving a very small stream. Now go to other faucets and open hot water, you bet, instant hot water! It'll keep this way as long as you keep that small stream flowing.

The problem is that small stream goes wasted. How about recycle it into the hot water heater? Sure, but how? The hot and cold water lines have the same pressure, therefore water cannot go from the hot line into the cold line. What if I add a pump into the hot line? Exactly, that's what this Watts product does. Problem solved.

For a practical and fine product, Watts also add a temperature sensor, so the recirculation only happens when the hot line becomes not so warm. This, plus the stream is really small, adds very small extra energy cost to the heater.

The pump is very small, only 25 watts, using less electricity than a lighting bulb. There is also a 24-hr timer (in 15-minutes increments), allowing you to shut the entire system off during the periods when you do not use warm water, such as sleep and work times. This reduces even further the already very small added energy cost. BTW, the pump is thoroughly quiet, no audible noise at all.

An alternative product is the Laing Autocirc. It is a single piece can all be installed under a sink, could be a better choice for some people. The downside is you need (to add) a AC socket there to power the pump. The upside is the pump does not operate continuously like the Watts; it is controlled by the temperature sensor and thus turns on only when water becomes not so warm. Might save some more Watts than the Watts. Both are available in Home Depot stores.

I cannot think of a single reason not to install such a system into any house. Instant hot water without any side effect or significantly added extra energy cost and saving tons of water each and every year. I wish I have done this long ago and this product will be more widely spread.

PS, a tip: before you start the installation, go to Rite Aid or alike store and buy a pack of Hose Washers for $0.99 (e.g. Plumb Craft by Waxman, 74-114, 6 pieces). After you unplugged the hose from the heater and before you plug it to the pump, you should remove the old washer and use 1 or, if the old one is very thick, 2 of the new washers (I had to use 2). The old washer was usually hardened by the high temperature; if you don't replace it, it will leak water. The menu does not mention this, so I learned this the hard way. BTW, hey Watts: for a $200 product, such washers should have been included.

M-D Building Products 4663 R-6.7 Water Heater Insulation Blanket Review

M-D Building Products 4663 R-6.7 Water Heater Insulation BlanketEverybody knows what these things do, so I don't need to explain it.This is basically fiberglass insulation with a thin plastic sheet on one side. You wrap it around your water heater and in theory this will save energy.

Installation is messy. No way around that with the pink fiberglass. You'll have to cut and tape. on the top.My water heater is 80 gallons so none of them fit, I had to buy two kits.Even more messy, but if you've every done arts are crafts as a kid, you'll figure it out.It does include nice white tape that blends. You won't anything more than cursory instructions.

Here's what you'll need to keep in mind. Unless you water heater is about 40 years old, this product if you use it like you might think, won't save much money. These tanks are already insulated pretty well. How can you tell?put your hands on the tank.If it's warm, you'll benefit. If it's cold, you won't.

But I discovered there's a lot more to this. When feeling the tank, I realized most of the heat loss is on the top of the heater. So I made sure I extended the blank to the top and covered the top. You'll have to do a lot of cutting and taping to make that look neat.Once you do that, you'll realize the bulk of the heat loss is not in the tank itself, but the pipes leading out of the tank.

So after you put this in place, you'll need to go to the hardware store and buy the pre-manufactured pipe foam insulators. They go on pretty quickly.Insulate about 10 feet away on the hot side of the heater.

Does it save money?Well, I found it reduces the time you have to wait for hot water, so it's definitely doing some good.

Plan to spend about 1/2 hour doing this job, and wear clothes that you'll wash afterwards. That glass fiber is really messy.

Rinnai R75LSeN Natural Gas Outdoor Tankless Water Heater Review

Rinnai R75LSeN Natural Gas Outdoor Tankless Water HeaterKeep in mind I have only recently installed my Rinnai on-demand water heater. It works perfectly. It comes with the water temp. set @ 120 degrees.Your installer will probably not re-set the temerature higher since it may be against state law. You'll have to do it yourself. It's not complicated but you'll have to find the tiny row of red buttons inside the unit. They are found on the right side of the unit as facing it.I wanted an outdoor unit since I did not want the expense of venting it that is required with an inside unit. Also safer.

Think about your winter temperatures.I purchased a pipe-enclosure unit that attaches to the bottom of your water heater.Stuff it with insulation.I used the kind that comes on a roll.Doing this will protect your pipe assembly unit from wind, freezing, and critters. The unit itself is protected to minus 30 degrees.

I found that 125 degree hot water is perfect.120 is not enough. You'll love endless hot water. You can buy a flushing kit called Flow-Aide from Whitlam...[...].It your water is somewhat hard you will want to flush your unit once or twice a year.It disolves lime, water scale and deposits in the applicance. If your water is extremely hard you ought to consider a house water filter and sediment filter. This is true especially if you have a well such a I do.The flushing kit comes with hoses, pump, bucket and flow-aide chemical.Make sure you buy a unit that is large enough to handle your needs. If you don't have a 2PSI gas service you will need to use a 3/4" dedicated gas line to your unit.

We love it, so far.

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 24 Electric Tankless Water Heater Review

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 24 Electric Tankless Water HeaterWe have a city townhome in North Carolina with five faucets, one shower, a dishwasher, and a washing machine -- all electric, no gas.Groundwater temperatures here range from 55-70°, with the extremes occurring in January/February and July/August, respectively. After researching the many available brands and models of electric tankless water heaters, we decided on the Stiebel Eltron Tempra 24 to replace our old 50-gallon tank. We've have had it for 6 months now with no problems whatsoever. It works great and more than meets our hot water needs for the entire condo. And it has actually saved us between $20-25 on each of our electric bills since it was installed, compared to what the tank heater was costing us.

According to the Stiebel Eltron website, the Tempra 20 model (not the 24) was the most appropriate for the size of our home, since we only have one full bath. But what if we had the laundry, dishwasher, and shower all going at once? This has never actually happened and likely never will; but we opted for the next-higher model, the 24, because it has more power. At 3 gallons per minute, the Tempra 24 can heat water 41° F above the ambient temperature; by contrast, at that flow rate, the Tempra 20 can heat only 33° F above ambient.Additionally, the 24 supposedly can heat two showers at once.Although we can't actually test this (again, just one full bath), we *have* had the washing machine running on hot at the same time the shower (2.5 gpm) was going at its normal setting and had absolutely no temperature problems or water flow shortages.

There's a specific flow rate required for the unit to activate: 0.58 gpm, which is easily achieved on most standard home faucets.Conveniently, the Tempra has an external dial that allows you to set the maximum temperature, which is displayed on a small digital panel.Like any tankless water heater, the faster the water flow, the less the unit is able to heat the water.

The Tempra 24 takes two dedicated 60-amp circuit breakers. We had to have a professional plumber and an electrician install the water heater and ensure that we had sufficient power supply. Our condo was built in the early 1980s, so we actually had to have the power supply upgraded from the nearest transformer to our entire building (!) and then upgrade our individual circuit box.(Apparently no one else in our building has upgraded their major utility appliances in the last 5 years, or the transformer work would have already been done, and we would have only needed to upgrade our circuit box.So, neighbors: you're welcome.)The electrical work actually ended up costing more than the water heater itself, but by that point we were already up to our knees in it (so to speak) and decided to see it out to the end.I'm glad we did, although it was a royal pain to deal with at the time.

Stiebel Eltron's website has a sizing guide as well as an electrical/technical guide for the Tempra models.I can't tell you how indispensable these guides were when we were deciding which unit to purchase.(Per Amazon's reviewing guidelines, I'm unable to link directly to them, but you can find them by going to Stiebel-Eltron-USA[dot]com > Products > Tempra & Tempra Plus > [scroll all the way down to the small "Resources" box] View Sizing Guide/View Technical Data.)

You may be wondering about the difference between the Tempra and the Tempra Plus.Based on the information on Stiebel Eltron's website, it appears that the Tempra Plus is most appropriate for commercial or industrial use, as it requires 2.2 gpm of water flow to activate.

It seems that most people who reviewed this unit on Amazon have had problems with it, and, unfortunately, those who have had positive experiences likely haven't been moved enough to write a review.I don't doubt the other reviewers' testimonials at all, and it's a shame that they received defective units. However, I felt compelled to let people know that there are consumers out there who bought this unit and have never had any problems with it.We couldn't be more pleased with ours.

If you're in the market for an electric tankless water heater, I encourage you to find additional consumer reviews on other websites to get a more accurate assessment of this product.Stiebel Eltron is one of the best tankless brands out there, and based on the research we did, the Tempra 24 was the best fit for us.I would recommend Stiebel Eltron as a brand and the Tempra 24 model without hesitation.Make sure you shop around for the best price (we didn't buy ours from Amazon) and get it from a retailer who offers insured shipping with signed delivery confirmation.Good luck!

** Update, May 21, 2010: Our Tempra 24 tankless is still working great. We've had it for nearly a year now, and it quickly and consistently heats our water and has not given us one single problem.I absolutely stand behind my earlier recommendation.Five stars.

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 24 Electric Tankless Water HeaterUnlimited supply of hot water: The Tempra; continually heats water instantaneously as you require it - and only when you require it. The Tempra; unit completely replaces a conventional tank heater with no disruption to your comfort and hot water needs.Save energy and reduce your electric bill: Electric tank type water heaters are subject to stand-by losses which amount to 15 - 20% of the kWH used. In addition, water in a tank has to be heated hotter than necessary to account for these stand-by losses. Changing to a tankless system like the Tempra; eliminates these problems and results in typical savings of at least 15 - 20% on the heating portion of your electric bill.Sleek design saves space: The Tempra; takes up considerably less space than conventional tank type water heaters and saves valuable living space.Control temperature simply by setting a dial: Set the knob on the front cover and enjoy water temperatures between 86;F (30;C) and 125;F (52;C). Advanced microprocessor technology ensures that the water temperature never deviates from the set point.Better than gas: The Tempra; has several advantages over a gas-type tankless water heater. Compared to many similar gas tankless models the Tempra; is less expensive to purchase. Installation is also much simpler and cheaper since it is not necessary to vent a Tempra; to the outside. The venting that a gas unit requires causes anywhere from a 10 - 20% efficiency reduction from heat escaping out the exhaust pipe. Furthermore, for every cubic foot of gas burned, two cubic feet of air have to be mixed in to create ideal combustion. In a cold climate, this hurts efficiency further. When a gas unit fires, it draws in air around it, heats the water, and then expels warm exhaust outside. Since no house is airtight, this suction action causes a drafting condition where cold air from the outside seeps back in through d

Bosch 2400ES LP AquaStar 6.4-GPM Indoor Tankless Liquid Propane Water Heater Review

Bosch 2400ES LP AquaStar 6.4-GPM Indoor Tankless Liquid Propane Water HeaterAfter purchasing an Aquastar 125LP unit, which was defective from the factory, we were "upgraded" to this unit at a discount rate because apparently Bosch discontinued the production of the Aquastar 125LP unit. After 2 months of use, the digital control panel went blank...so we called Bosch. They will not deal with homeowner's...only the people who installed the unit...this equals a service call for the gas company and the plumbing company just to tell Bosch the unit was installed correct. I am sure the unit was installed correct, because it worked great for two months. I asked them to send a Bosch representative so they could inspect the unit for themselves...they do not have service representatives in the field. At this point, we are cutting our losses and purchasing a water heater that is not made by Bosch.

Factory-Reconditioned Aquastar (Hydro) Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater 1600H-NG Review

Factory-Reconditioned Aquastar Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater 1600H-NGI selected the Bosch Aquastar 1600H for several reasons. It was the correct size for my 3 bed 1 bath ranch home where all of the plumbing is centrally located.I liked the fact that there was no standing pilot light OR plug for an igniter on the system. But the biggest selling point was that it used standard 4" Class B vent pipe for the flue. Most of the tankless water heaters that cost $900 to $2000 stab you in the pocket book again by using 3" stainless steel flue pipe that costs a fortune. In fact, a lot of them have optional kits that start around $300 for the basic pieces with you needing to buy additional pieces just to install you heater.
Now, the negative.First off, understand that I am a contractor by profession and that while installing this water heater was pretty straight forward; diagnosing issues with it is a whole different ball of wax. This was the first time that I had ever installed a tankless water heater and I was putting it in my own home. After changing my plumbing lines around, switching out the black pipe to ¾" for the gas line, running a new flue and hooking everything up, I was having problems getting it to function correctly.More specifically, the heater would not heat the water to a desired temperature and if the furnace or the stove/oven was running, the temperature would drop even more. After checking the manual and getting online to find out how to make a manometer ([...]), I found that the natural gas pressure was set incorrectly for my house. It was measuring around 5 WC (inches water column) and while it didn't really come out and say it, I found that this heater works best on at least 6 ½ WC.While the pressure was fine for my stove, the furnace and my old water heater, it just wasn't enough for this new water heater. The manual says to have the gas company come out to test and adjust the pressure, however, I just did it myself and set it to 7 ¼ WC.I will say that while this heater saves natural gas by not constantly heating the water in a tank, it does use A LOT more to heat your water when it is in demand.Another thing I found out, if installing this water heater in a climate where the temperature can drop below freezing, MAKE SURE that you install it in an area where there is good air flow with a decent ambient temperature. The reason being is that tankless water heaters like this Bosch Aquastar work on a capillary system to heat the water. If cold air comes down the flue, it can freeze the water in the heat exchanger and bust the pipes within it or just not function as your water line for your hot water will not flow.
However, after that, I will say that I have continuously enjoyed an endless supply of hot water. With two teenagers in the house, I can tell you that it used to be frustrating to have to wait an hour to take a shower if they had used the shower beforehand. This is the reason that I went with a tankless water heater to begin with.I also am happy to report that my gas bill was and has continued to be cut in HALF.I have been using this system for 7 months now and I can't wait to see my bills for the winter.

Thermwell Prods. Co. SP60 Frost King Water Heater Insulation Jacket Review

Thermwell Prods. Co. SP60 Frost King Water Heater Insulation Jacket1. Measure the tank's height.Mark the foil side with a magic marker, then cut the wrap on the floor. It's near impossible do it with the wrap on the tank. There are foil tabs to secure the wrap to the top of the tank . . . make sure you cut the correct side.I found that scissors worked just fine to cut it.

2. My gas water heater is only thirty gallons. The width of the wrap did not need adjustment - it just fit.The description says it fits up to 60 gallon size.I can't see how. Some other reviewer with a larger tank will have to comment on this.

3. Use the measurement of the tank's height and pre-cut a length of tape this size.Next, cut four 6" pieces - these will be used to tape the sides of the wrap together. Finally, cut the remaining tape into 4" strips for use in taping the tabs on the top of the wrap to the tank.I had enough tape for my small tank.Other reviewers complained that there is not enough tape.If in doubt, buy a small roll of foil tape when you buy the wrap.

4. If you have a gas water heater, position the wrap so that the connecting parts are on the front. On my heater, the loose end tucked neatly behind the gas line and valve.

5. Tape the top with two 4" pieces where the two sides meet. Then pull the foil sides together from the top down using the 6" pieces to tape across the meeting point. Finally, use the long piece of tap to tape it once more vertically.

6. Cut out a section of the wrap on the bottom at least 3" away from the burner assembly. You want to stay warm, not cause a fire.

7. Finish off by taping the top with the remaining 4" pieces of tape making sure you don't go anywhere near the flue.

The Frost King make is reasonable quality. It's available from your local hardware store, Home Depot or Lowe's at a better price as Amazon . . . plus no shipping cost.

Rheem Direct Vent Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater For 2-3 Bathroom Homes RTG-66DVN Review

Rheem Direct Vent Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater For 2-3 Bathroom Homes RTG-66DVNThis is the second Rheem tankless water heater I've installed during my ongoing-home-renovation project (I now have one on each end of the house).
Some things to be aware of:
1)There is a lag for the tankless water heater to kick in and start hot water through the pipes (three seconds?).My kitchen sink is on the floor directly above the tankless water heater and I have to run over a gallon of water out before I get hot water. For that reason I am going to install under-the-sink, pass-through mini-tank (2.5 gallon) electric water heaters in the kitchen and bathrooms for instant hot water.
2)In both cases I've direct-vented horizontally, through a stud wall that is in front of a 12" concrete block wall. The main horizontal 3"/5" pipe that comes in the direct-vent kit is too short to go through about 17" of wall, so I had to buy a longer 3"/5" pipe (for an extra $100) from Rheem to get through the walls. You still need to buy the kit, though, for the elbow and outside termination pieces.
3)This is subjective, but it seems the water in the hot water pipe gets cold faster than it did with the tank water heater. With a tank water heater you could get hot water, then come back 20 minutes later and the water was still fairly warm right away. With the tankless water heater it seems the water gets colder faster, so you have to run that gallon of water through the pipes to get to the hot water again. In both cases the hot water pipes were insulated.
4)About once every two-three months the wired-in remote control displays an error number...it has been different every time. The first two times the error number wasn't listed in the documentation, so I called for telephone support. Now I just unplug the unit, wait 5-10 seconds, and plug it in again. It starts right up.
5)I can't be sure it was only the swapping out of the water heater, but my gas/electric bill has been, on average, a bit lower since replacing my old 40 gallon gas water heater.
